Old Brampton W.I. - December 2006
Our Christmas festivities started with a Carol Concert and Nativity Play put on by the staff and children of Wigley School. After their performance the W.I. invited the children and their families to seasonal refreshment in the Old School Room.
Our meeting followed the next day and started with a brief business meeting, when the five resolutions were discussed and members were reminded of the forthcoming Spring Council meeting on March 12th when Christine Hamilton will be the speaker.
Joan Miller was thanked for making all the mince pies for the tea after the church service. We then went on to the festivities of the afternoon. First a play called Don't Dare Mention It was put on by the members of the Reading Group, which was about women through the ages. This proved to be extremely funny and was well received by all.
Then a sumptuous tea supplied by our President, Mrs Waller, and members of the committee, followed by a raffle of Christmas food, drink and plants, and with a favour for everyone to take home. Christmas cards were distributed and everyone wished a Happy Christmas.
Old Brampton W.I. - January 2007
Our President, Mrs Waller opened our January meeting by wishing all the members a Happy New Year, and thanked Mary Walker for the beautiful bowl of roses on the President's table which, after the meeting were to go to one of the members who had been in hospital. The minutes were read and members were pleased to hear of the successful Cycle Cuba Challenge which had raised money for Denman College. An outing to see the tapestry at Winster was discussed and also the forthcoming Spring Council meeting at Chesterfield. Our new luncheon club is to start this month and members were reminded of the birthday party to be held in March.
Our speaker was Mrs Jackie Bailes who writes and performs her own poems. She told us that she had started to write when she was looking for something to feel passionate about and her first performance had been at her local village hall at an evening to raise money for Oxfam. She found applause to be a drug and has gone on to write poems on many subjects including her recently acquired dog, Wilf. Jackie then went on to share a number of her poems with us, some funny, some sad, some thought provoking but all stimulating in their different ways.
After the vote of thanks teas were served by Mary Walker and other members. Visitors are always welcome to our meetings, held in the Church School Room in Old Brampton on the second Tuesday of each month at 2 pm.
On February 13th Mrs Alva de-Chiro will speak on Memoirs of Mishap and Mayhem.
