The May meeting began with a ploughman’s lunch prepared by the committee. Mrs J Collis gave an account of her pleasant time at Denman College, Winter Walking in Cotswold villages. On the last night there was Scottish Dancing and a Burns night supper. Two Denman Bursaries have been awarded to Mrs R. Smith and Mrs I. Savidge, to be taken in 2008.
Mrs D. Walker opened the business meeting. She canvassed opinions about this years resolution, due to be debated at the Annual Meeting at the Albert Hall, next month. The resolution opposes the Governments proposed closure of Community Hospitals. The majority voted for the motion and our delegate Mrs J. Bennison will be advised accordingly.
Mrs O. Hoddle gave dates and details of future outings: a strawberry tea at Holmesfield, a musical evening at Barlow and visits to Beamish and Tutbury castle in September. May 15th will be the last Scrabble meeting before the summer break. The Derbyshire Link gave the results of the County Quiz. Congratulations to one of our teams who came 3rd at the Stavely venue.
Flowers and cards have been sent to Mrs Mary smith and Mrs Ann Comley who have been ill. We wish them a speedy recovery.
Mrs Jane Latham, appropriately wearing a red Cycle Cuba T-Shirt and Lycra shorts, gave an amusing account of her experiences. 38 cyclists took part in the tour, and were very well received by the Cuban people. Jane raised almost £3000 in sponsorship towards the restoration work at Denman. Souvenirs of the trip-craft work and jewellery were passed round. Mrs Mary Walker gave the vote of thanks. Muriel Wardle and Ann Lee served teas and Kate Hallowell arranged the flowers on the president’s table.
The following day fifteen members went by coach to Winster village where they were shown the beautiful tapestry made to celebrate the Millenium. Every aspect of village life was illustrated in an array of different styles – from petit point through appliqué, canvas and silk painting to French knitting done by the children. There was a most detailed account of how it all came together followed by tea with home made cakes. Mrs M. Sutton, who had arranged the visit gave a vote of thanks to our hostesses.
