OLD BRAMPTON W.I. (June)

Mrs D. Waller welcomed twenty members and a visitor, Mrs E. Hill to the June meeting. Mrs R. Smith was thanked for the charming vase of roses on the president's table.

In this month's Derbyshire Link there are several opportuties for members: two photograph competitions, a Gold Work craft day at Wadshelf in October, a visit to Quarry Bank Mill and the Family Proms at Tutbury Castle.

Names were taken for a visit to Taddington Well Dressing and Flower Festival on 22nd August.

Mrs Waller will be hosting a tea-party at her home on 14th August in aid of the Contact Centre, which she has chosen as her charity for 2007.

Mrs R. Smith reported that she has sent cards to several members who have been in hospital. Fortunately most are now at home and making good progress.

The Solar Pyramid at Poolsbrook was the subject of the   afternoon's talk by Mrs Helen Loizou. This amazing project, combining science with art, visible from the M1 will stimulate business and tourism and regenerate this deprived area. The Pyramid is twice the size of the Angel of the North sculpture. It comprises three polished steel towers forming a giant sundial and an atomic clock. The £1.2  million structure is powered by it's own solar cells. Fund  raising is continuing. Mrs Loizou explained how local   organizations can help by purchasing a `Moment in Time' of their choice. There are also schemes for buying a brick, or a balloon to be released on the launch day. Mrs K. Shelton gave the vote of thanks.

Mrs J. Ilett and Mrs I. Savidge served teas and the meeting closed at 4 p.m.
